Modern dentistry has developed and successfully applied a variety of methods of prosthetics for lost teeth, but there are classic situations when the solutions proven over the centuries do not give up their position to the latest methods. Removable dentures are just one such solution.

What is a complete removable denture?

A full removable denture, commonly referred to as a “denture,” is a device that is fitted to people who have lost all of their teeth . A complete removable denture replaces all the teeth except the wisdom teeth. It can be easily inserted and removed. It can be worn by people of any age who have lost all their teeth for various reasons.

Today’s technologies and materials have significantly improved the aesthetic and functional capabilities of removable prostheses. For example, the introduction of new polymers has made it possible to significantly reduce the load on the gum tissue of patients, and the improvement of attachment methods allows for a more personalized approach to their selection and fabrication

The situations in which removable dentures are recommended have not changed over time – the same age-related tooth loss, serious maxillofacial trauma, and periodontitis in advanced stages. While comfort and ease of care of removable dentures are more important for people of advanced age, younger patients also pay more attention to the aesthetic appearance.

Hypoallergenic synthetic materials such as acrylic, nylon, polyurethane, and various types of plastics are used in the fabrication of removable dentures to reduce discomfort from wear and visual similarity to native teeth.

Well-known dental brands have long established the production and sale of special creams and solutions used in the daily use of removable dentures.

For the correct choice of removable prosthesis design and its high-quality manufacturing, the specialists of City Smile Center use the most modern equipment and materials, and as a result – we are happy for our patients, who again give their loved ones beautiful smiles.

How do I care for a removable denture?

A removable denture requires careful care in order to maintain its original appearance. Therefore, it must be removed after every meal in order to clean it with a soft-bristled toothbrush that will not damage the material. It is necessary to thoroughly clean the artificial teeth and their attachment system. Before putting the denture back on, you should also rinse your mouth with a suitable mouthwash to remove all food debris. This step is very important because plaque is caused by saliva. Bacteria accumulated between the denture and the gum tissue can cause:

  • infection (abscess, etc.);
  • the development of a condition called gingivitis;
  • exacerbation periodontal disease.
  • every evening after thorough cleaning after meals, you should dip the appliance into a glass of water mixed with an antiseptic solution. This step disinfects the denture, ensuring you have healthy, odorless dentures. At night, the denture should be kept in a glass of water until morning.
Can a removable denture be worn at night?

No, this denture is removable, so it is not recommended to keep it on while you sleep. It is important to let the gum breathe at night so that it does not become irritated or deformed.

Removable or fixed full denture, how to choose?

Depending on health conditions, expectations, and budget, the dentist can recommend a solution that is most suitable for the patient. Nevertheless, it is useful to know the advantages and disadvantages of a removable denture compared to a fixed denture. A removable denture presents strong arguments in its favor, particularly the fact that:

  • is a non-invasive solution to replace teeth . No surgery is required;
  • it costs less than a fixed denture;
  • quick prosthetics, unlike a full bridge: implant placement requires surgery and healing before the prosthesis can be created.

On the other hand, it is characterized by several disadvantages that imply the fact that its necessity on a daily basis causes practical limitations such as:

  • The special care that a removable denture requires after every meal and at night;
  • Having to take it off at night or for at least 6 hours a day may be a limitation.
